TV Jun 27, TV Aug 30, United States Beth Moon is an American photographer, recognized for her large-scale, richly toned platinum photographs.
Mostly black-and-white, her stunning images are invitations to wonder and bewilderment, portraying subjects such as ancient and legendary trees from remote locations, hills and coast, and soulful animal humankind interactions in the natural world. Originally from Novota, California, Beth Moon studied fine art at the University of Wisconsin, where classes in painting, life drawing, sculpture, and design would set the groundwork for her work in photography, which was to come years later.
Unhappy with the photographic tonality and stability of simple ink-jet printing, Moon started to experiment with alternative printing processes after moving to England. There she learned to print with platinum, an ideal process for her vision, which has an ability to greatly amplify the spirit of enchantment that permeates her work.
Beth Moon became a specialist in the Mike Ware platinum printing method, which is renowned for its incomparable luminosity, ability to create a wide range of tones and its remarkable level of permanence.
Like gold, platinum is a very durable metal, meaning that a print can last thousands of years, drawing on the common theme of time and survival, pairing photographic subject and process. With many steps involved in creating the final print that are as important as capturing the image itself, the platinum printing allows the artist to be true to her vision and define many decisions.
Working the materials by hand, much the way a painter would, Moon has the freedom to pursue her creative vision in process. Mystical and magical, the black-and-white photographs of Beth Moon from her Portraits of Time series celebrate nature and our relationship to it as a primary elemental experience.
Just as living monuments, some of them more than 5, years old, these magnificent trees have figured out how to adapt and withstand changing environmental and human impacts. As the earth becomes increasingly crowded these symbolic trees will take on a greater significance reminding us, through their grandeur and age, how essential they are to our psychology and how precious they are to the soul of the world.
How do I express their power and beauty to those who have never seen them? How do I convey this power and beauty to those who have? I want to speak the language of the trees. Beth Moon returns to the subject of ancient trees inin her recent series titled Diamond Nights. She portrays jewels of star-studded skies set against immense and marvelous trees, making her photographs ethereal and full of majestic beauty, leaving the viewer breathless with awe.
Most locations depicted in Diamond Nights were wild and remote, far from civilization and light pollution in the southern hemisphere. Mighty and eccentric baobabs and surreal quiver trees are featured in this work, titled after constellations named by the ancient Greeks and Romans. In that way, she connect these ancient, long-gone civilizations with olden trees that are still standing strong.
She has won numerous awards, including the Golden Light Award from the Maine Photographic Workshops and she has been published widely in major photographic magazines. Remember me on this computer Forgot Password. Are you a business user? Click here. Subscribe Yes, add me to your mailing lists.

The book celebrates her beautiful platinum prints that are truly other worldly, but her subjects are very rooted in this planet. I am featuring a selection of her images in no particular order. This first substantial monograph reveals the way Moon approaches her subjects from a place somewhere between science and spirit; grounded in reality yet moving to a place universally accessible to others. Since her work has appeared in over 50 one-person and group exhibitions in the United States, Italy, England, Israel, Dubai, Brazil and France, as well as receiving critical acclaim in major fine art publications.
She studied fine art at the University of Wisconsin before moving to England where she experimented with alternative processes and learned to print with platinum. She currently lives with her family in the San Francisco Bay Area. Unrivaled by any other printing process, platinum like gold, is a stable metal. A print can last for thousands of years, emulating the age of the trees that I was photographing. I have had a number of exhibitions in Italy over the last couple of years with a wonderful gallery, PH Neutro.
The owner of the gallery showed my work to a couple of publishers in Milan and a few days later I received a proposal from Charta. It all happened so fast! The book is really unique as it showcases a number of seemingly unrelated projects, but they are related by technique, sensibility, and the natural world. What does it mean to you to have these bodies of work combined into a book? One of the first solo exhibitions I had in London.
The gallery owner wanted to combine images from 2 bodies of work. On most occasions I have shown that way ever since, so it seemed natural to take a sampling of each body of work for the book. Faverolles golden. Time seems to be an important part of your work—whether the age of a tree or a flower or of your children…. I end up thinking about time quite a lot actually, I am usually aware of how fast it slips by. Certainly it is hard for me to grasp the age of some of the trees that I have photographed, at over 4, years old.
I love that your projects celebrate beauty, especially in the natural world—can you speak to that? I am often in awe, with great appreciation of many aspects of nature, so perhaps it is this emotion that I am trying to capture and translate. I do not simply want to document, but instead record the beauty and enthusiasm that I feel towards the subject when I take the photograph.
From the first day I begin to work on a series until the day the prints are drying, usually takes a few years. So many changes occur, thoughts expand, I think you need to know the content inside and out. Some projects fall by the wayside, I usually have at few going at the same time, but the strong ones endure. Sleepless nights are usually a good sign that the project will surface.
I jot down notes to start an artist statement right away which serves to keep my thoughts focused. I tape small images onto a large sheet so I can look at them at different times of the day, I like to see how they shape up as a group.
I take some down and add new ones. When I feel like I have a large group that works together, I then make medium size platinum prints to check contrast and composition and edit down from those prints. Do you have an advice to pass on to emerging photographers? There are so many photographers today and numbers seems to grow.
With the increase of talented graduates looking for work, recognition and gallery sales are more difficult. It is always best to have another line of work while you take the necessary time to build a portfolio. Essential qualities: dedication, patience and most of all passion. Moving to England, a country with a love for all things arboreal, gave her a fresh look at a land that boasts the largest concentration of ancient trees.
Inspired by these trees she decided to make a series of their portraits. She concentrated on mastering this printing technique, doing all of her own printing. For each print I mix ground platinum and palladium metals, making a tincture that is hand-coated onto heavy watercolor paper and exposed to light. There are many steps involved in creating the final print and these are as important to me as the capturing of the image," said Moon.

Dog The Bounty Hunter has proudly flaunted his latest relationship and said that this time his late wife Beth Chapman would approve of his partner. Dog, real name Duane Chapman, made the romantic announcement as he posed for a series of snaps with girlfriend Francie Frane, obtained by The Sun. Francine is a year-old rancher from Colarado and is said to be making the year-old TV star very happy.
His daughter Lysssa Chapman and close family friend Rainy Robinson told The Sun that they are very pleased with the match and 'couldn't be happier' for widower Dog. The lovebirds were introduced when Francie's husband Bob was asked to do some work at Dog's Colorado mansion. Sadly, Bob later died just several months before Dog's wife Beth lost her battle with cancer in June. Dog and Francie bonded over their shared grief before their friendship turned to romance, Lyssa claims.
Lyssa added that given their mutual circumstances, Dog and Francie are both very respectful of each other's grieving processes and aren't trying to act as a replacement. Lyssa, 32, was very vocal in her disgust at her dad coupling up with Beth's former friend Moon, who also used to date his son. Despite mass disapproval from the Chapman clan, Moon and Dog enjoyed a brief fling before calling things off last month.
