The Russian martial art of Sambo was developed in the first several decades of the 20th century, in the wake of the Bolshevik Revolution and the fall of the czarist regime. From the beginning, Sambo has been a constantly changing system, adapting itself to fit the needs of its fighters, from soldiers on the battlefields of World War II to crime fighters on the streets of Moscow.
Today, Sambo is practiced in three distinct ways: as a competitive sport, as a self-defense method and as a lethal combat system employed by police and military forces. It was included in the Olympic Games in Moscow in as a demonstration sport, though it failed to gain the popularity necessary to become a competitive event. Specific techniques help defend against various types of attacks, including weapons, choke holds or direct foot or hand strikes.
The combat version of Sambo takes the sport and self-defense techniques to the next level, including more vicious kicks, punches, throws and spine locks and even dirtier techniques such as biting, which is outlawed in sport competition.
Fighters also learn techniques that can be used to fight in small, enclosed spaces, on the floor or against more than one opponent. Request Information Now!The word "SAMBO" is an acronym of sam ozashchita b ez o ruzhiyawhich literally translates as "self-defence without weapons". The pioneers of sambo were Viktor Spiridonov and Vasili Oshchepkov. Oshchepkov spent several years living in Japan and training in Judo under its founder Kano Jigoro.
Spiridonov and Oshchepkov independently developed two different styles, which eventually cross-pollinated and became what is known as sambo. Compared to Oshchepkov's system, called "free wrestling" in Russia known in the West as catch-as-catch-can wrestling or simply catch wrestlingSpiridonov's style was softer and less brutal.
It was also less strength-dependent, which in large part was due to injuries Spiridonov sustained during World War I. Anatoly Kharlampieva student of Vasili Oshchepkov, is also considered a founder of sambo.
There are multiple competitive sport variations of sambo though sambo techniques and principles can be applied to many other combat sports. Below are the main formats that are recognized by FIAS. Combat sambo is designed to tackle certain tasks. The effectiveness of this martial art determined by its structure, namely by three components: boxing, sambo and adapters.
Adapters of combat sambo were developed by the academician G. The task of adapters is to ensure the safe transition from middle distance to close one, as well as the consistent usage of sambo and boxing techniques. The given configuration provides the fusion of two martial arts into a single system.
Vasili Oschepkov was one of the first foreigners to learn Judo in Japan and had earned his nidan second degree black belt, out of then five from judo 's founder, Kano Jigoro. Spiridonov's background involved indigenous martial arts from various Soviet regions as well as an interest in Japanese jujutsu though he never formally trained it.
His reliance on movement over strength was in part because during World War I he received a bayonet wound which left his left arm lame. Both Oschepkov and Spiridonov independently hoped that Soviet military hand-to-hand combat techniques could be improved with an infusion of the techniques distilled from other foreign martial arts. Contrary to common lore, Oschepkov and Spiridonov did not cooperate on the development of their hand-to-hand systems. While Oschepkov and Spiridonov did have occasion to collaborate, their efforts were not completely united.
Each technique was carefully dissected and considered for its merits, and if found acceptable in unarmed combat, refined to reach sambo's ultimate goal: to stop an armed or unarmed adversary in the least time possible.
Podvoyskiy to train the Red Army. The task of developing and organizing Red Army military hand-to-hand combat training fell to K. Catch wrestlingGreco-Roman wrestlingmany Turkic folk wrestling stylesand Japanese jujutsu. As a combatives investigator for Dynamo, he traveled to Mongolia and China to observe their native fighting styles.
InOschepkov and Spiridinov collaborated independently with a team of other experts on a grant from the Soviet government to improve the Red Army's hand-to-hand combat system. Spiridonov had envisioned integrating the most practical aspects of the world's fighting systems into one comprehensive style that could adapt to any threat. Oschepkov had observed Kano Jigoro's distillation of Tenjin Shin'yo RyuKito Ryu and Fusen Ryu Jiu-Jitsu into Judoand he had developed the insight required to evaluate and integrate combative techniques into a new system.Played as a combat sport across the world and in Russia, its country of origin, Sambo is also a form of martial art.

Difference between Sambo and Wrestling
Origins of wrestling go back 15, years through cave drawings in France, Babylon and Egypt.Sambo originated as a combined effort from Vasili Oshchepkov and Viktor Spiridonov, by integrating the techniques of judo, jiu-jitsu, and other foreign martial arts into native wrestling styles.
Spiridonov was more involved into several martial arts from various Soviet regions as well as Japanese Jiu Jitsu. But he was never a formal trainee on any specific art.
Spiridonov was particularly keen on using technique over strength due to his bayonet injury during WWI which left his left arm almost useless. Over the years, Russia and former Soviet Union, continue to build on their initial concepts of unarmed combat and evolved it into the Sambo system we know today. The art is used today, not only as a sport, but as a form of self-defense, crowd control, law enforcement training, military training, and more.
But the art of Sambo was never officially introduced. Once Freestyle Wrestling was removed from the Olympic Games inall other styles associated, to include Sambo, were removed as well.
Unlike the original Sambo uniform which consisted of either a red or blue Gi or Jacket called Kurtka, a belt, same color shorts, and wrestling shoes; Sambo wrestlers were not allowed to wear it at Olympic participation.
Sambo became quickly recognized for their exceptional repertory of leg attacks. To this day, a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fighter will be very careful to not let a Sambo fighter come close to his or her legs. The limited use of leg attacks in Olympic Wrestling gave Sambo fighters a definite challenge and an obstacle to conquer. We understand that not everyone is interested in competing or making a career out of Sambo Wrestling. In many cases, people choose to train Sambo as a weight management tool or self-defense.
We will never encourage or require from any of our students to engage in an actual fighting event. If the student so chooses, we will take according action and tailor the program for that student to help him win. For most students, Sambo Wrestling will be taught purely as a self-defense system and athleticism. All fled in different directions, except Sambowho, presuming on the favor which the keeper had to him as a licensed wag, stood his ground, ducking his head with a facetious grin, whenever the master made a dive at him. Sambo in the carriage, together with a very small and weather-beaten old cow's- skin trunk with Miss Sharp's card neatly nailed upon it, which was delivered by Sambo with a grin, and packed by the coachman with a corresponding sneer--the hour for parting came; and the grief of that moment was considerably lessened by the admirable discourse which Miss Pinkerton addressed to her pupil.
